In the art world in the United States and Western Europe, concerns over the human body, body image, and cultural representations and signifying processes have been a major topic of creative practice and critical inquiry for at least two decades. 1
Feminist scholars have devoted a lot of attention to the ways in which the media inform how women and girls see their own bodies, and the ways in which individuals cope with social and media pressure to conform to certain body images. We are interested in taking these insights from feminist and gender studies into the understudies realm of the gay male body image, and what it means for the self-perception of gay men and the construction of gay cultures.
One of the most significant ways in which gay men have examined this issue is through art; from Tom of Finland to David Hockney to Robert Mapplethorpe, to name only some of the most well known, the range of artists who deal with the gay male body is significant and worthy of
further study.
The marginalization of gay men may contribute to a preoccupation with body image and the public self-consciousness of the gay man. Body dysmorphia or reverse anorexia, a condition where men who are already large and muscular see themselves as puny and weak, and because of this other body image issues associated with the idealized male physique may exist in order to relieve fears of masculinity and social placement among gay men and boys. This is a condition that is not confined to only gay men but has become pervasive in straight (heterosexual) male culture. In a work by Billy Stroud, called Every Body’s Doing It, most of the images are taken directly from mainstream, ‘non-gay’ fitness or fashion media.
Gay men are constantly exposed to the supreme “Adonis-like” perception of masculinity which has become part of the fabric of the gay sub-culture. This image of a “ripped” and “cut” male body has become a dominant feature of the brand personality of gay male culture. Even research 2 reflects findings that say gay men give high priority to the physical attractiveness of a partner and an increased pressure to achieve a body like that seen in the media has spurred the trend. Because of this, gay men are predisposed to be more body conscious and actively pursue what they consider a healthy life yet the reality is that in gay sub-culture that healthy image often coincides with more unhealthy or destructive activity like recreational drug use, excessive drinking and the use of non-approved nutritional supplements and steroids.
Placing value on appearance rather than content becomes central to appreciating an object’s worth. And in this case the body becomes an object absent of individual identity or content. The idealized physique of the gay male body image confuses the lines between identity based on one’s attributes as a person and those physical features considered desirable – by one’s self or by the spectator. Gay men have fetishized their personal existence, their bodies and the bodies of men, in general, despite their personal identity as men. Gay men have “outed” personal desires by reflecting them in images of the body and through the commodification of the body as valuable and acceptable according to the standards of the images we consume in society.
This project called “Skin Deep” only scratches the surface yet explores many issues, images and facets of the gay male body image through art. As mentioned, one of the most significant ways in which gay men have examined this issue is through art. Artists who deal with the gay male body and the socio-cultural issues surrounding it is significant and worthy of further study.

commodification is about turning something which is not ‘naturally’ a commodity into one. historically the body has been seen differently in different cultures, but typically as the mortal carrier of the soul, whether sexually celebrated or abnegated on the way, and whether incidental or expressive of that soul. early capitalism (and historically any imperialistic culture that traded slaves) treats some designated bodies literally as commodities, to be bought sold worked and sexually used. femininity as a modern construct typically objectifies women as things, and in late capitalism/modernity with the soaring rise of consumerism at a certain stage makes femininity into a set of assets the owner of the female person has to buy to experience her femininity. and at a certain point men, and not just gay men have been pulled into this alienated consumtion of the self as well. branding of everything allows all of us to consume ourself and to sell ourselves to ourselves and others as objects with branded characteristics – a good example of this is the book though not the film of american psycho. baudrillard suggests that we now even have to buy back our leisure time which is packaged up for us as rental events set against our earnings. his chapter on this in The Consumer Society is a harrowing read. if you decide to check him out further there is loads on the net, but Seduction is a very interesting heavier and more intense read.

NEW DELHI: Pre-marital sex may be out of the closet thanks to Bollywood and Mallika Sherawat but Indian women are still coy about admitting to this indulgence.
According to a working report by an international NGO, Population Council, fewer than 10% of young Indian women reported pre-marital sexual experience while a much higher number (15-30%) of young males admitted to it.
While the report notes that pre-marital sexual activity is clearly more common among men, some differences may reflect due to “over-reporting among males and under-reporting among females”.
The report “Actions that protect: promoting sexual and reproductive behaviour and choice among young women in India” is authored by Shireen J Jejeebhoy and Mary Philip Sebastian.
There are an estimated 300 million young people (aged 10-24) in India of which adolescents (aged between 10-19) and youth (aged 15-24) represent one-third of the population.
They are by far healthier than any other age group and many of them are economically active but continue to be poorly educated, giving them opportunity but little reliable information about sex.
Evidence suggests that among young people who are sexually active before marriage, sexual debut occurs in late adolescence.
“There is also evidence to suggest that several more anticipate sexual activity in the foreseeable future: for example, while 15-17% young males in a Lucknow slum reported sexual activity, some 38% reported anticipating a sexual encounter in the next six months,” the report says.
Studies also suggest that sexual behaviour falls along a continuum: from non-penetrative activities like hand-holding, kissing and touching to intercourse.
The report cites a study of low income college students in Mumbai that shows 26% of young men and 3% of young women reported penetrative sex, while many more, 49% and 13% respectively, reported other forms of physical intimacy.
The study however rubbishes the theory that certain areas in the country have high prevalence of casual sex relations.

The experience is so odd, that as soon as every teen graduates from high school, he/she immediately drops the ritual of robotically group-chanting the Pledge each morning. The 12 years of conditioning (brainwashing, indoctrination, discipline) are acted out in other ways. People wear clothing patterned after their flag fetish: flag shirts, caps, bandanas, boxers, bikinis. Other people wear clothing that evinces a lust for government officials, authority figures, police, military or anyone in a uniform: black leather, boots, whips, chains, and riding crops. Atrocities of the socialist Wholecaust are mimicked with branding, tatoos and piercings that harken to BDSM.
America’s sick obsession still has relevance to the enormous size and scope of government and to the USA’s growing police state.
The TS dogma in the USA included oddball theories about superior races, superior societies, a “Great White Brotherhood” of masters, sub races, and seven primary root races, including the “Aryan” race, which Blavatsky described as superior to some other “races” (Cf. As early 1875, Blavatsky’s famous personal seal employed a swastika symbol and promoted the swastika throughout the TS (Jinarajadasa, p. 19 with the heading ‘H.P.B.’s Seal in 1875’ and The Theosophist, August 1931, p. 645). The swastika is the top-most symbol of seven symbols, and the swastika is placed underneath a royal crown and directly atop another central symbol, a hexagram (six points), with the other six symbols in a circular arrangement around the six points. Blavatsky’s seal also employs alphabetic symbolism in the form of Blavatsky’s initials in the center of the seal.
The swastika that Blavatsky used is unusual because it is exactly like the swastika adopted later by the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSGWP) and otherwise known as “the socialist swastika” : The swastika sits on a point (it is turned 45 degrees to the horizontal) and the arms point clockwise.
The historian Dr. Rex Curry (author of “Swastika Secrets”) showed how that style of swastika emphasizes the “S” letters for “Socialism,” or the “Superior Socialists” or “Socialist Society.”
Although the swastika was an ancient symbol, Professor Rex Curry proved that it was used later by German National Socialists to represent “S” letters for their “socialism,” as well as an “N” letter overlapping an “S” letter for “National Socialism.”

Nationalist Clubs were inspired by Edward Bellamy and his famous utopian novel set in the year 2000, “Looking Backward from 2000 to 1887,” published in 1888. It was Bellamy’s wet dream of authoritarianism. It was the third largest bestseller of its time and was known as the Bible of National Socialism. The German translation not only promoted National Socialism in Germany, it also promoted National Socialism in America and cultivated those Americans who later supported the USA’s German-American Bund movement that supported the National Socialist German Workers’ Party. The socialist movement in the USA was dominated by German-Americans.
Edward Bellamy also influenced his cousin Francis Bellamy, famous for the Pledge of Allegiance. Francis created the Pledge to promote their dogma in government schools. The Bellamys admired the military and they wanted the entire economy to ape the military. They called their dogma “military socialism” and they wanted to create the “industrial army” through government takeover of all schools.
When the government granted their wish, government schools imposed segregation by law and taught racism as official policy. It served as a bad example for three decades before the NSGWP. The practice in the USA even outlasted the NSGWP by more than 15 years.
The Bellamys were bigots, racists, and xenophobes and they obsessed about new immigrants coming into the USA. Edward’s book “Equality” (1897) shows his intolerance for individuality and his desire for universal brotherhood by making everyone the same through government force in government schools (socialist schools).

Rosenberg was born to Baltic German parents in Reval (Tallinn) Estonia, then part of the Russian Empire. He studied architecture at the Riga Polyechnical Institute and engineering at Moscow University, completing his Ph.D. studies in 1917.
After the Russian Revolution of 1917, he emigrated to Germany (in 1918) along with his friend Max Scheubner-Richter. Rosenberg was one of the earliest (January 1919) members of the German Workers Party and it became the National Socialist German Workers Party and adopted the swastika as its symbol and used the symbol to represent “S” letters for “socialist.” In 1921, Rosenberg became editor of the Völkischer Beobachter (“Folkish Observer”), the newspaper of the National Socialists.
Rosenberg also became a member of the Thule Society, founded August 17, 1918. Rosenberg and the Thule Society touted oddball ideas about socialism, universal brotherhood, and the Aryan race that were all borrowed from the notorious socialist and occultist Madame Blavatsky and her Theosophical Society, formed in New York in 1875. Those schools still exist. Infants are given social security numbers (socialist slave numbers from 1935 during the NSGWP) that track and tax everyone for life. Government schools (socialist schools) demand the numbers for enrollment.
Today, children in government schools enter through high chain-link fences, past assembly-line searches of students, through the metal detectors, hand-wanding and x-rays of purses and backpacks, past video surveillance cameras in the hallways, past the police dogs sniffing lockers and youngsters, and finally past all the locked doors and into the classroom. Once inside, they watch robotic chanting of the Pledge of Allegiance to the USA’s growing police state. Later, they are asked for urine samples for mandatory drug testing.
